Welcome to the fourth episode of MuChat Café!
In this episode, we sit down with singer and model Rika Vuong for a relaxed conversation with host Jae Lau, looking back at her journey since entering the Chinese Miss Pageant in 2006 and her experiences in the Hong Kong entertainment industry.
Rika shares about her family background as one of four sisters, her Vietnamese-Chinese heritage, and how her family communicated with the sisters in Cantonese and Chinese while she was growing up. She also talks about how participating in the Chinese Miss Pageant led her into modelling and gradually opened the door to performing and entertainment.
From modelling and fashion shows to various entertainment and group activities, Rika looks back on the different stages of her career in Hong Kong, including her involvement with U-IDOL, working with other models and entertainers, and her gradual transition from modelling to becoming a singer.
The conversation also explores a side of the entertainment industry that is rarely discussed publicly. Rika recalls past experiences involving contract issues, casting experiences, and situations that made her feel uncomfortable. These include a movie casting that did not match the information she had originally been given, followed by a series of unexpected events. She also shares how she dealt with these experiences and eventually found her own direction again.
After leaving Hong Kong, Rika returned to Canada and gradually shifted her focus towards music. She talks about her current approach to music, including Cantonese, Mandarin and English songs, and even hopes to explore Vietnamese-language music in the future.
The episode also takes a deeper look at her new song, Metamorphosis. Rika shares how the song is connected to her life experiences and state of mind, and how it gradually came to life from a particular chapter of her journey. While the song may sound upbeat on the surface, there is a deeply personal story behind it.
Of course, no episode of MuChat Café would be complete without some fun segments! Rika takes on a “This or That” and Q&A challenge, answering questions about music, movies, BTS, and more.
And finally, there is a special punishment game — Rika has to sing using animal sounds! From a rabbit and a frog to eventually choosing to perform with a “duck voice,” this becomes one of the funniest moments of the episode. 🐰🐸🦆
