In this special interview from EARS Online, Hong Kong TVB Best Actor Joel Chan joins host Jae Lau during his three-city tour in Canada for an in-depth conversation about his recent work, personal life, and hopes for the future.
From television dramas and films to behind-the-scenes production and music, Joel Chan candidly shares his thoughts on the current “winter” facing the film and television entertainment industry. As he puts it, “It’s not that I don’t want to act anymore; it’s that I can’t right now.” Despite the changing landscape of the industry, he remains determined to explore new opportunities and possibilities.
During the interview, Joel also talks about his experience working on the Malaysian Chinese New Year film Mama Wants to Get Married Again! 《媽媽又要嫁！》, as well as his hopes of becoming more involved in film production in the future. He reveals that his biggest dream for 2027 is to make a film of his own — one that he can invest in and create together with a group of friends.
Beyond acting, Joel shares his “beauty-loving” side, his food experiences during his three-city Canadian tour, and his upcoming plans to launch a food-focused YouTube channel. Starting with Penang, he hopes to combine local food, lifestyle, and conversations with interesting people, eventually expanding the channel to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, and beyond.
As a singer who began his career in music, Joel also discusses the possibility of releasing new songs or other musical projects. While he currently has no plans to release an album, he remains open to singing again if the right song and opportunity come along.
The conversation also touches on his son Jaco, how father and son stay connected through FaceTime, and his expectations for future television dramas, films, stage performances, and music projects.
Towards the end of the interview, Joel reveals that he hopes to return to Canada for performances next year — and even hopes to hold two shows or a fan meeting at the same venue where this interview took place.
